Lake Brunner - Moana Village

Lake Brunner is one of the fastest growing tourist destinations on the West Coast. The main township is Moana, situated at the north end of the lake. Lake Brunner Resort stage 1 has brand new apartment style and studio accommodation, the perfect base to explore Lake Brunner and surrounds.

The lake surrounding rivers and streams of Lake Brunner, has some of the best brown trout fishing in the South Island, with year round fishing on the lake and some rivers. Fishing guides, licences, tackle and tackle hire are available locally.

The area also features abundant bird-life, and a variety of wetlands and rainforest ecosystems. As a destination, Lake Brunner is a great place for family holidays with picnics by the lakeside, beautiful bush walks and safe swimming bays.

The Lake Brunner Service Centre has all that a service station has to offer with two full time mechanics available and also a full mechanical workshop. Not only do they sell petrol and oil but also have a good supply of food, fresh vegetables and fruit, ice-creams, drinks etc and they also sell fishing licenses. They are also the local Post Centre where they can tend to all your postal requirements. Hours are 8am to 6pm seven days a week except for Christmas Day. Your host is Julie and Dave Larking.

Moana has a population of approximately 70 full time residents. Afew residents work in Greymouth but choose to live in Moana because of its beauty and lifestyle. Other work is from the forestry, farming, sphagnum moss collecting and local businesses. We also have a retired population enjoying paradise.s

The surrounding batches are owned mostly by out of town people, which we refer to as local loopies. During long weekends and holiday periods, the village can swell up to over 2000 people. The lake is a very big part of Moana and during the summer periods the lake and village is inundated with boaties, skiers, day trippers and travellers alike. For those who can not access a boat, have access to some lovely beaches within walking distance.

Iveagh Bay, some two kilometres east of the village is a up and coming area. Some lovely batches have been built there in the past few years. With its beautiful lagoon, beaches and picnic areas, Iveagh Bay is a very popular spot.

Although the West Coast is renown for rain dripping from the trees, this is somewhat incorrect of Moana. We are not coastal, therefore our weather is approximately 5 degrees warmer than Greymouth or Hokitika. We do not experience the rainfall or winds that the coastal towns do.
